Understanding Bridges & Routers: The Backbone of Networking

When we talk about computer networks, two important devices always come into play — Bridges & Routers. Both play a key role in connecting and managing data traffic, but they work in different ways.

A Bridge is used to connect two different networks or segments, usually within the same type of network. It works at the data link layer of the OSI model and helps reduce network traffic by filtering data. Bridges are excellent for creating smaller, efficient network sections while still keeping them connected.

A Router, on the other hand, operates at the network layer. It is smarter than a bridge because it not only connects networks but also directs data packets based on IP addresses. Routers are widely used to connect multiple networks together, including your home network to the internet.

In simple terms:

  • Bridges connect networks of the same type.

  • Routers connect different networks and guide traffic intelligently.

Both Bridges & Routers are essential for smooth communication in modern networking. Understanding their role helps us build faster, secure, and reliable systems.
